A Learning Experience
((ePortfolio Question Two)
The production of the project opened up a new world for Marks, since, in order to produce quality video segments that would reach the target audience (students at the College of Journalism) effectively, he had to take it upon himself to learn about SPJ and the SPJ Code of Ethics. This led to extensive research on the Code itself and its four pillars, and many hours of asking questions to Dr. McAdams as they worked! As Marks is a business student and not a journalism major, he credits this project for expanding his insight on ethics. He plans to apply lessons learned here to his studies and work going forward.
Personal Growth
((ePortfolio Question Three)
The production of the project has given Nolan an extensive base of new knowledge regarding ethics and conduct in the face of ethical dilemmas. For evidence of this learning experience, he's selected the introductory video in the "POINTS OF VIEW: ON ETHICS" series to highlight his speaking ability regarding the subject, since, in the video, he lays out the rationale for the project, building upon Dr. McAdams points. To go from not knowing anything about the SPJ code of ethics as a non-journalism student to being able to speak freely on camera about the rationale of this project was a huge step for Marks, and is able to be viewed at THIS LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGZ2t_jWGDk&list=PL1GmVwiVGOtGo8BFJb_F77htI37XyksBj&index=1
PLEASE NOTE: A few additional videos in the series as evidence of this project can also be viewed with the link titled "Series Sampler" on the bar above.
Moving Forward
((ePortfolio Question Four)
Moving forward, Marks plans to utilize his new expertise on SPJ and the SPJ Code of Ethics in the face of any potential ethical dilemmas. Objectives such as transparency and Dr. McAdams' testimonial on "Do No Harm" apply specifically to journalism in these cases, but can also be applied further to business operations, leadership, and other situations Marks is likely to find himself in the middle of in the future. He will also take lessons learned from familiarizing himself with new subjects in order to produce videos such as planning extra time to ask questions (as he did with Dr. McAdams) in any future situations where creative and/or business affairs require new insights and knowledge. This experience is listed on his resume, and he plans on speaking about this experience in future interviews to indicate skills such as adaptability, drive, and willingness to be a lifelong learner.
